  • Markup - The tagging of information that describes how it is structured, laid out and formatted on a web page by a mark-up language, such as HTML.
  • Parameter – This is used in the template to define the values that an object can use, this gives some control from within the template.
  • POP3 - POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) is the most recent version of a standard protocol for receiving e-mail. POP3 is a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you by your Internet server. Periodically, you (or your client e-mail receiver) check your mail-box on the server and download any mail, probably using POP3. This standard protocol is built into most popular e-mail products, such as Eudora and Outlook Express. It's also built into the Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers.
  • glossary of termsPlug-in- A piece of script that interacts with the template to produce a wanted result in the output. Often written in JavaScript.
  • Search engine - A web site that is designed for accessing specific areas of the internet based on a word search.
  • Server - A computer, or piece of software that houses or runs programs that deal with various internet related operations e.g. email.
  • Style Sheets - See CSS.
  • System style sheet – This style sheet is used to contain all styles that can be used across the site. It should sit outside of the CSS folder and be linked to from within all templates.
  • Usability - Making a website usable means ensuring that it is designed to be as user friendly and simple to use as possible.
  • W3C - World Wide Web Consortium. An independent body who set standards for development of the internet and it's associated technology.
  • WAI - Web Accessibility Initiative. The W3C's standards and guidelines for creating accessible websites.
  • Webroot – The default directory where all the sites folders sit.
  • World Wide Web (www) - The huge collection of inter-linked web sites that a available on the internet today.
  • WYSIWYG – used to describe any technology that enables the user to see an image of text and graphics on a computer display exactly as it will appear when printed. Stands for “What You See Is What You Get”.
  • XHTML - eXtensible Hyper Text Markup Language. Used to structure and present information on web pages. The successor to HTML..
