Glossary (including Accessible terms)

If you're not familiar with any of the terms used on this site this page should help you out.

  • Accessibility – Accessibility is the measure of how well a website is designed to be viewed and used by everyone regardless of ability or disability. An accessible website ensures that all visitors have the same experience whether they use assistive technology or not.
  • Assistive technology – A specialised piece of equipment or software which is used by someone with a disability to improve their ability to use a computer. Types of assistive technology include screen readers, refreshable braille displays, screen magnifiers, voice recognition, closed captioning, alternative keyboards and mice.
  • bobbyBobby – A software tool which can be used to evaluate the accessibility of a website. Websites which have met the requirements often display the "Bobby approved" badge. Bobby is owned by Watchfire.
  • Cache – The area of memory used for a working application, normally a “refresh” clears it.
  • Content management - For greater productivity on larger sites and easy management of information.
  • CSS – Abbreviation of “Cascading Style Sheets” Also frequently referred to as Style Sheets. A language which can be embedded into web pages to provide visual formatting. Intended to replace deprecated formatting tags and attributes in HTML..
  • DDA - Disability Discrimination Act (1995). Legislation introduced in the United Kingdom to tackle the discrimination that people with disabilities encounter. Particularly significant because it specifically applies to websites and requires that owners and designers provide equal access to information and services to everyone, regardless of disability.
  • Document - Any data that can be represented in a digital form.
  • Domain name - The unique name of an Internet site (e.g. www.zanet.co.uk).
  • E-mail - Stands for Electronic mail and is the process of sending messages sent from one person to another via the internet. The messages can be text, pictures, sounds or a whole program. E-mail can be sent automatically to large numbers of addresses known as mailing lists.
  • Flash Animation - A fairly new web page format that enables lots of graphics, sound and interactivity to be delivered on-line very quickly and neatly.
  • Host - A computer that stores web sites that is turned on 24 hours a day and that is always connected to the internet. This means that no matter what time of day it is people can always access your web site.
  • HTML – Abbreviation of “Hyper Text Markup Language”. Used to structure and present information on web pages. By far the most common mark-up language used on the web.
  • Internet - The enormous collection of networks from all over the world that are all linked together.
