Who needs Accessible Web Sites?
Well it's a fair question as 5 minutes ago the answer would of been, sorry, what are you talking about? But there are over 8.9 million people with a disability in the United Kingdom, with 3% being born disabled. This represents a sixth of the UK’s population with an annual spending power of over 60 billion pounds. Some disabilities needs are more common in the older age groups, with almost 70% of disabled adults aged over 60. Nearly 75% of the nation’s wealth is held by the over 50’s who have an estimated annual income of 184 billion pounds.
So back to the question, who needs Accessible Web Design. The law demands it. The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) exists to ensure products and services are accessible to all. Products and services on the internet are also included.
Let’s look at some access issues that affect web sites:
Visual Impairments need accessible sites
Visual Impairments takes into account, blindness, low vision (impaired sight) and colour blindness (most commonly red - green).
